I am fascinated by the placebo response and often wonder if the good effects of drugs (and even natural products) are placebo responses. In a report published in the New England Journal of medicine, enthusiastic physicians treating patients with angina got a 70-90% response from the patient while physicians that were a bit sceptical about the drug had 30-40% good responses from their patients to the same drug.

In another study using the same drug (antacid) to treat stomach ulcers there was a 79% response in the private hospital while only a 17% response in the government hospital.

Clearly the power of the mind over the body can change everything and does suggest that all drug trials may be more of a trial around the doctor-patient relationship than the drug itself.
