Recently I watched a ceremonial presentation by Nkosinathi Koela’s Indigenous Sound Frequency, a group of incredibly talented musicians.
It felt for me the first time after a lifetime of living in South Africa, that I was able to enter into the deep earth connection of the African spirit. The way the performers feet hit the ground and the deep sounds of their voices, the painted faces and the background drumming all contributed to a deep resonant connection to earth energy. I could not help contrasting this with the energy of sitting in an Indian temple meditation and hearing people chanting. The former was all mother earth and celebrating the body energy, and the latter was air and celebrating mind and meditation.

Bernard Brom qualified in medicine in 1965. He gave it up, travelled for six years, and came back to spend the next sixty asking one question: how does health actually work? He founded the South African Society of Integrative Medicine, chaired it, started its first journal, wrote two books — and still sees a few patients every week, "to stay in touch with the territory."
