One of five readings from Bringing Spirit Back into Medicine.

Mrs GM respects the husband she has lived with for twenty years — but the sparkle has gone, and her deep feelings are no longer with him. Friendship, or love? A doctor sits with a choice that is not his to make.

We all struggle when faced with choices, and wish very often that someone else could make the choice for us — hopefully towards a better situation than one may have at the present moment.

Mrs GM has been to me many times for various medical problems, but always our conversation seems to end up at the same place. Should she stay with her husband of 20 years, or leave? There is no ill feeling between them; they still do a lot together, go for walks, the cinema and restaurants, but the sparkle has gone. No sex for years now, and while she recognises that this is not the most important thing in a relationship, she is aware that while she really respects the man she lives with, her deep feelings are no longer with him.
